Why print this
Vase mode produces a completely different kind of print: one continuous spiral extrusion from bottom to top, no infill, no top layers. It’s faster than you’d expect for the result, and the translucent quality of thin PLA walls in vase mode is genuinely beautiful. It also teaches you that slicers have many modes beyond the defaults.
Before you slice
You must enable vase mode before slicing this model. In PrusaSlicer, look for “Spiralize Outer Contour” in the Print Settings. In Bambu Studio, it’s called “Vase Mode”.
Settings for vase mode:
- 0% infill
- 0 top layers
- 1 perimeter (or 2 for a thicker wall)
- 1 bottom layer (or 2–3 for stability)
- Layer height: 0.2 mm
The model should show as a single shell in the layer preview, with no internal structure.
What to expect
- Enable vase mode in the slicer before importing or after clearing settings.
- Slice with the settings above. Verify the layer preview shows only the outer spiral wall.
- Print time is approximately 3 hours 16 minutes at 0.2 mm.
- The vase can be printed in any PLA colour. Lighter/translucent colours show the petal definition better.
- Let the bed cool before removing. The base is thin — flex the PEI sheet gently.
If it goes wrong
- Model has infill or top layers — vase mode wasn’t active when you sliced. Re-slice with it enabled.
- Wall is too thin and cracks — increase to 2 perimeters in vase mode if your slicer allows it.
- Base lifts during printing — add a brim. The thin circular base can be prone to warping.
- Layers not fusing well midway up — nozzle temperature dropped or filament flow inconsistent. Check that the filament isn’t tangled on the spool.
Recommended slicer settings
Paste into PrusaSlicer or OrcaSlicer — adjust to taste.
